In ancient times, it was believed that a person's name determined their destiny. Following this belief, a car called Monza – like the car racing track dubbed "The Temple of Speed", one of the oldest and most famous in the world – is destined to leave its mark. Then, when Monza is the name and Ferrari the surname, the ingredients are all there. Even before showing how fast it was, Ferrari Monza demonstrated its flair for grabbing the spotlight, courtesy of vintage charm reminiscent of a "barchetta" of the fifties, the very body type that started the legend of the brand with the prancing horse badge.
To draw this new limited-edition sports car, the Ferrari Style Centre headed by Flavio Manzoni took inspiration from the racing charm of the family forerunner, namely the 166 MM from 1948, but also of other icons, such as the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. Taking its name from the latter, the Ferrari Monza will come in two versions – the SP1 (single-seater) and SP2 (two-seater). For both, first and foremost the driving pleasure. The extraordinary weight-to-power ratio of the car, resulting from painstaking work to make it lighter, is a guarantee of that direct connection between tarmac and steering wheel that the lovers of pure driving satisfaction seek in a sports car. Between tarmac and steering wheel are the tyres, of course, and the Pirelli P Zero tyres developed specifically for Ferrari Monza are another innovation marking the introduction of 21-inch models on a car made in Maranello. This was one of the development factors followed by Pirelli engineers who worked to associate record-setting geometry with the trademark Ferrari stiffness, comfort and performance. Furthermore, the tyres were also called to contribute to weight reduction. To achieve this result, instead of using traditional ply reinforcements, they redesigned of the bead, which can now maintain lateral stiffness and containing weight. This solution shaved off 1.2 kilograms. The Pirelli P Zero sizes chosen for Ferrari Monza are 275/30 R21 on the front and 315/30 R21 on the rear.
The technical specifications of the Ferrari Monza are truly sensational: 810 hp delivered by a generous aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine, from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed that shatters the 300 km/h barrier. This said, the magic of the Ferrari Monza cannot be expressed in numbers. First of all, it has a unique instant classic look, with a flat waistline, huge wheels, upward-pointing doors (one door on the SP1), opening forward engine bonnet, open, backward-stretching cockpit. Some may say that the Ferrari Monza sums up entire history of Ferrari – motorsports wins, uniqueness, a V12 under the bonnet and plenty of charm. The rest can only be discovered by driving it.
