Rear-wheel drive is the only thing that anybody who truly loves driving will settle for, as it's the ultimate way to really feel the dynamics of a performance car at work. It's for these dedicated purists that Lamborghini has created the RWD version of its famed Huracán Evo, devoid of the four-wheel drive that normally comes as standard. Now there's an open-topped version of the RWD drive car as well: it takes just 17 seconds for the electronically-operated canvas to fold back into the compartment behind the seats. Then, you're free to enjoy top down, RWD bliss: just as pure driving should be.
The top can even be put down while going along, at speeds of up to 50kph. The convertible version (and you can get the soft top in any colour you like) flatters the lines of this iconic Italian sports car but doesn't compromise conversation. In fact, you can have a perfectly civilised chat with either the roof up or down – thanks to the two noise-buffering side windows. There's also a glass rear window, which can be raised or lowered regardless of the roof position. Put it up, and it acts as a windshield. But it's more fun to keep it down and listen to the howl of the V10 right behind your shoulders.
A featherweight bull
The aluminium body and aluminium-carbon fibre chassis ensure that this latest Lambo weighs just 1509 kilograms: 33 kilograms less than the four-wheel drive Huracán Evo. Weight distribution is split 60-40 between front and rear, with the suspension and damper layout also optimising feedback for the driver. The car sits on 19-inch Kari wheels equipped with Pirelli P Zero tyres that were specially developed for the Huracán Evo, while ventilated and cross-drilled steel brakes provide the all-important stopping power. Alternatively, you can opt for 20-inch wheel rims and carbon ceramic brakes. The RWD Spyder also benefits from a bespoke Performance Traction Control System (P-TCS), which makes it deceptively easy to drive. You can choose whichever driving mode you like via the ‘Anima' selector (which means ‘soul' in Italian): ‘Strada', ‘Sport' and ‘Corsa'. Or ‘road', ‘sport' and ‘race'. Enjoy.
A fleet of 610 horses under the bonnet
The P-TCS system helps to deliver adrenaline-packed performance under any driving conditions, even with extreme inputs. It has the formidable responsibility of harnessing the power of 610 horses produced by the mighty V10 5.2 litre engine at the heart of this Huracán Evo RWD Spyder, putting out 560 Nm of torque. That actually gives it 30bhp and 40Nm less than the hard top Huracán Evo, but nobody will complain when it comes to performance. Top speed is 324kph, with 0-100kph covered in just 3.5 seconds. In only 9.6 seconds, you can go from 0-200kph. There's a seven-speed robotised gearbox (the same as the coupé) while the power-to-weight ratio means that every horse has to shift just 2.47 kilograms. But it's the rear-wheel drive handling that you're really going to love with this car.
A unique design
The design of the Huracán Evo RWD Spyder is unique, making it clearly distinguishable from its 4WD namesake. The ‘purist' version features a bespoke front splitter and vertical fins, along with a wider and more defined front air intake, while the glossy black rear bumper incorporates a brand new diffuser. The beautifully-finished cabin is dominated by an 8.4-inch touchscreen, controlling all the major functions. The options when it comes to upholstery and paint finish are almost unlimited thanks to the Lamborghini Ad Personam programme, which allows clients to customise their cars.
