The tyre that speaks to the car

Performance and safety with Pirelli’s latest innovation, the Cyber™ Tyre, making its début on the Pagani Utopia

Home Road Cars Tyres The tyre that speaks to the car

For the first time ever, tyres are able to communicate with vehicle stability control systems, including ABS, ESP and traction control. A unique technology on the market, which enhances the level of specialisation of car electronics, also in a prospective of autonomous driving. A technology that looks to the future, but which is already available: this is the latest evolution of Pirelli Cyber™ Tyre, the sensor-based system that is making its début on the latest model launched by Pagani Automobili, the Utopia.

The P Zero Corsa, P Zero Trofeo RS and P Zero Winter developed specifically for the Pagani Utopia, in fact, are all equipped with sensors located on the inside of the tread. These sensors, which are connected via Bluetooth to the electronic control unit that manages the vehicle dynamics, will provide useful information so that the car can choose the ideal settings of the control systems according to the tyre fitted, exploiting its full potential.

A dialogue between tyres and cars, which has been enabled by the software created and integrated by Pirelli within the electronic “brain” of the vehicle. For instance, when the car is fitted with winter tyres, the ABS will make the best use of them to reduce stopping distances. Conversely, when the vehicle is equipped with semi-slick tyres, the stability and traction controls will work knowing they have a higher traction reserve.

Without this information, the systems that manage the vehicle dynamics operate conservatively, based on settings that do not take into account the characteristics and performance of the tyres fitted. This technical “awareness”, therefore, will enable the car's controls to work at their best while simultaneously elevating both performance and safety.
