The eclecticism of the Scorpion is evident from the outset. It is in fact using the technologies of various tyres together, including those used for rally cars and for premium cars with very high performance levels, that Pirelli developed a new parent tyre for its Scorpion line in 1986, which was revolutionary for its ability to ensure maximum grip and safety on different road surfaces. Characterised by special side fins to improve the way the tyre skims over desert sand, the Pirelli Scorpion was designed to equip the new “LM002” Lamborghini off-road vehicle, intended for nothing less than the Government of Saudi Arabia. The Scorpion soon made its appearance in the racing world. For the Paris Dakar in 1988, Pirelli débuted by fitting cars such as Porsche, Nissan and Lamborghini with its Scorpion car tyre range.
THE WORLD OF SUVS, A CONSTANTLY EXPANDING RANGE OF TYRES
For modern-day motorists, the Scorpion is undoubtedly synonymous with SUV and cross-over (as well as off-road) vehicles. SCORPION FOR MOTORBIKES
The Scorpion brand has extended to the world of motorbikes, allowing riders to travel on roads and venture onto gravel trails without ever changing tyres. The Scorpion Trail II in particular is perfect for adventure bikes, the Scorpion Rally STR is a tough-looking knobbed tread tyre that offers a balanced behaviour both on- and off-road. The Scorpion Rally is on the other hand the king of the desert, developed for maxi enduro bikes that don't even fear the toughest trails. Pirelli has also developed Scorpion tyres for pure off-road use and off-road racing, with a generous 76 world titles won in the World Motocross Championship using tyres from the Scorpion MX and Scorpion MX 32 families.
FROM MOTOCROSS VICTORIES TO MOUNTAIN BIKES
It is Pirelli's experience in off-road racing that has led to the launch of the Scorpion bicycle tyre range, which includes the Scorpion XC, the Scorpion Trail, the Scorpion Enduro and the Scorpion E-MTB. Rally and motocross are fundamental parts of Pirelli's DNA, at the heart of the research and development activities which have led to the launch of the Scorpion MTB, dedicated to mountain bikes with a shape of the tread knobs derived from the experience and technologies of the Scorpion MX range, used on all motocross and supercross racing tracks in the world.
