A four-litre V8 biturbo engine. 650 hp and 850 Nm of torque. Top speed: 305 km/h. Empty weight: 2200 kg. The power is unleashed on the road to go from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. But, as Pirelli teaches, power is nothing without control. And of course, this applies to the most recent “bull” of the Lamborghini line-up: the Urus. So, engineers in Sant'Agata Bolognese chose to outfit the most powerful luxury SUV ever with the safest and best-performing tyres ever: The P Zero, the P Zero Corsa and the Scorpion tyres made by the brand with the stretched P logo.
Pirelli developed tyres to measure for the Urus to control and exalt its excellent performance. For this “super SUV”, as they call it in Sant'Agata, Pirelli could only create “super tyres”: with sizes spanning from 21 to 23 inches, the summer, winter, all-season, all-terrain and sports tyres made in Bicocca are only the most recent stage of the now decade-long partnership with Lamborghini.
This year more than ever, the two brands have been by each other's sides on race tracks and roads. Pirelli and Lamborghini were together in Valencia, for instance, in January for the launch of the Aventador S which fits bespoke P Zero tyres. They were together again in Torino for the presentation of the 2017 Pirelli motorsport season, the 110th in the tyre makers history. And at the Geneva Motor Show, the auto maker with the bull logo was one of the first to fit Color Edition P Zeros. Tinted "Police Car Blue" were the tyres of the Huracàn given to the Italian Police by Lamborghini. Scattered along the year were weekends under the sign of performance and competition on the tracks of the Blancpain and Super Trofeo championships. A more unusual collaboration complemented the motorsports events: Lambo was one of the brands picked to launch the new P Zero Velo, created this year for racing bicycles. Pirellisupplied tyres and support for the cars of the Young Drivers Program and for the GT3 Junior Program Lamborghini racing team, and also for the bicycles used by the athletes for training. It is a known fact that being in good physical shape is the foundation of any sport, including motorsport. This year, Lamborghini Squadra Corse has added cycling to the training activities for youngsters competing in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo single-make championships and the promising talents racing in the main GT championships worldwide. Pirelli was there, sharing and sometimes trailblazing the values that inspired Lamborghini in their choice: the attention to young drivers, the research for up-to-date, sustainable mobility solutions and the understanding that the human factor is crucial for technology. Or rather, that no technology can replace the human body and mind.
From bicycles to the fastest SUV ever. Since that fateful 1963 when Ferruccio Lamborghini asked Pirelli to kit out the first car of his newly established brand, the Pirelli-Lamborghini connection has never ceased to produce innovative solutions, adding new ideas and concepts as time went by, keeping one step ahead in imagining and building the future. To travel safely and fast.
