BMW iX: greener still with the P Zero elect

Pirelli tyres dedicated to electric and plug-in hybrid cars equip the full-electric flagship from Bavaria

Home Road Cars Tyres BMW iX: greener still with the P Zero elect

The new BMW iX does not go unnoticed: a 100% electric SUV, highly innovative in terms of design, technology, interior equipment and its electric platform. Something making it even more unique and sustainable are the P Zero Elect tyres, which are factory-fitted on the xDrive50 and the more sporty M60 versions. A star on the sidewall identifies the new product developed specifically for this BMW, in accordance with Pirelli's “perfect fit” philosophy, and for people who like to exploit this vehicle's performance to the maximum, Pirelli has created a set of tyres providing even more grip compared with the other two. There is no mistaking them because in this case, as well as the star, there is an “I” which denotes their particular characteristics.

With this new type-approval, Pirelli is increasing its presence as an original equipment supplier for new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles thanks to tyres equipped with the new Elect technology package. Driving comfort with low on-board noise levels, immediate grip, ample range and safety are the principal features which mark out Pirelli's Elect branded tyres. The new product from Pirelli developed for the BMW iX thus confirms the path chosen by the company, which is planning specific tyres for electricity-powered cars, BEVs or plug-in hybrids: these products are being developed in order to enhance the characteristics of electric cars and can be recognised thanks to the Elect markings on the sidewall of the tyres themselves.

TYRES FOR A LONGER RANGE FOR THE BATTERIES

The Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres were developed for the BMW iX by concentrating on a low level of roll resistance in order to allow the car to travel an increased mileage with its batteries. In fact, they carry a European labelling assessment of class A, which rates this particular characteristic, allowing the driver to profit fully from the car's entire performance capabilities.

Another feature which improves the range of travel is the specific shape of the tyre, which provides an enhanced aerodynamic profile compared with a standard P Zero. Thanks, in fact, to a modified external profile, the protective edge of the tyre protrudes less, so as to avoid generating aerodynamic turbulence, leading to the improved efficiency of the tyre, without this causing any insufficiency in the protection of the wheel.  In addition, there are the innovative inscriptions on the sidewall of the tyres created thanks to the so-called Sunk method, whereby they are “carved out” rather than protruding from the surface.

SILENT AND WITH MAXIMUM DRIVING COMFORT

Particular attention has been paid to comfort for those who drive the BMW iX, and in fact, the dedicated Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres are also equipped with PNCS technology (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) which allows the noise generated by the rolling motion of the tyres to be reduced. The PNCS technology is constituted by a particular type of sound-absorbing material placed on the inside lining of the tyre, which allows it to absorb the vibrations which would otherwise be transmitted to the interior of the vehicle, resulting in a reduction in the noise generated by the rolling motion of the tyres. The structure of the tyre has been optimised to handle the increased weight of this 100% electric zero-emission vehicle, guaranteeing a high level of driving safety in all traffic conditions
