The year 1971 was a special one for Lamborghini. It was when the first Lamborghini Countach was made and the super sports car with its sharp, angular shape would change the fortunes of the carmaker based in Sant'Agata Bolognese company forever. As a tribute to the icon of the past, the new Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 is here and with a limited run of 112 examples, it will still be fitted with Pirelli tyres after 50 years. This continues one of the most fruitful technological partnerships in the automotive world.
PIRELLI P ZERO AND P ZERO CORSA TYRES FOR THE 21ST CENTURY COUNTACH
A super sports car with a hybrid system capable of delivering 814 hp and a top speed of 355 km/h. This is the 2021 Lamborghini Countach, a tribute to a model that is celebrating its half-century anniversary. Pirelli has fitted size 255/30 R20 P Zero tyres on the front and size 355/25 R 21 tyres at the rear, engineered to promote performance on the road and excel in terms of safety, control and directionality. Optional P Zero Corsa tyres will be available for the drivers who want to have fun on the track.
FROM P7 TO P ZERO CORSA, THE EVOLUTION OF THE COUNTACH
Designed to be revolutionary, technically advanced and faster than the iconic Miura, the Lamborghini Countach became the iconic sports car of the 1970s and the predecessor of the modern concept of high-performance cars. In those years, the sportiest Pirelli tyre was the Cinturato CN12, which gave rise to the low-profile concept and lead to the Pirelli P7, which was fitted as original equipment on the 1971 Countach LP 500 prototype. Production of the Countach kicked off two years later with the LP 400 of which only 152 examples were produced until 1977, making it the most sought-after version by collectors. The LP 400 was followed by the LP 400 S, with new, super-low-profile Pirelli P7 tyres. After the Countach LP 5000 S (1982-1985) and the LP 5000 Quattrovalvole (1985-1988), the Countach 25° Anniversario debuted in 1988 and was the first Lamborghini to be fitted with Pirelli P Zero. The tyres for the classic versions of the Lamborghini Countach are still available in the Pirelli Collezione range.
PIRELLI AND LAMBORGHINI: A COLLABORATION THAT GOES BACK A LONG WAY
Ferruccio Lamborghini asked Pirelli to tyre the 350 GTV, the first car of his fledgling car company, in 1963. The prototype led to the 350 GT, the first production model of the time-honoured brand, which was fitted with Cinturato tyres with HS (High Speed) specification designed for sports cars capable of reaching 240 km/h. Pirelli later made specific tyres for the Lamborghini LM002 with Pirelli Scorpions, the Lamborghini Diablo (1990) kitted out with Pirelli P Zero, the Murciélago (2001) and the Gallardo (2003) with P Zero Rosso tyres. The brand with the charging bull emblem created a special version of the Aventador – called the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Pirelli Edition – to mark more than half a century of partnership. Pirelli continues to develop dedicated tyres for Lamborghini's ever-widening range from the Scorpion for the Urus SUV to the P Zero or P Zero Corsa for the coupés, spyders and roadsters.
