The BMW M5 makes a groundbreaking debut with its seventh generation as the very first electrified M5, available in both sedan and touring versions. Launched at the renowned Goodwood Festival of Speed in England earlier this year, this latest icon combines BMW M typical performance with advanced hybrid technology for the first time. To complement its capabilities, the new BMW M5 is equipped with Pirelli's latest innovation for winter driving: P Zero Winter 2 tyres.
Where electrification meets performance
The seventh-generation BMW M5 introduces a new era of performance with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Pairing a 4.4-litre V8 engine with an electric motor, this vehicle delivers a combined power output of 727 horsepower and a truly impressive 1000 Nm of torque. Accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds, it graphically demonstrates how electrification doesn't compromise power, driveability, and performance.
The M xDrive all-wheel-drive system ensures fully variable power distribution between the front and the rear axle, offering a dynamic driving experience for which M models are renowned. Its rechargeable battery with a usable energy content of 18.6 kWh supports charging at public stations with up to 11 kW. It provides a declared WLTP electric-only range depending on the model of 67 or 69 kilometres, balancing its prodigious performance with sustainability.
Pirelli P Zero Winter 2: a perfect match for the BMW M5
To harness the full potential of the BMW M5 in winter conditions, Pirelli's P Zero Winter 2 tyres have been specifically developed for this high-performance vehicle. Available in 285/40R20 111V XL and 275/40R20 109V XL sizes, these bespoke tyres are designed to deliver superior performance, safety, and control in challenging winter conditions.
The P Zero Winter 2 is Pirelli's most advanced winter tyre, with an ‘A' rating on the European tyre label for wet grip across all sizes. Its exceptional braking performance on snow earned it the top spot in the 2024/2025 winter test published by renowned website Tyre Reviews.
The technology behind the rubber
Pirelli's research and development team employed advanced virtual design tools to create the P Zero Winter 2, resulting in a tyre that is entirely redesigned compared to its predecessor. The new tread design brings significant improvements in terms of snow performance, braking, and handling – as well as also delivering improvements on dry surfaces.
The sipes, which run parallel to the main grooves, are wider where they contact the road and then narrow toward the inside, enhancing traction on snowy surfaces while optimising driving performance. The main grooves are connected by smaller transverse grooves, creating an intricate pattern that ensures grip on slippery surfaces during a wide variety of manoeuvres.
These innovations make the P Zero Winter 2 a perfect choice for winter driving, while its consummate ability to handle the new vehicle concept and tremendous power of the new BMW M5 complements the vehicle's phenomenal performance. A large part of this is down to the eight-cylinder engine, which revs up to 7,200 rpm and propels the car to a top speed of 305kph in versions equipped with the M Driver's Package.
Working closely with the M team
In 2022, BMW's fabled M label celebrated its 50th anniversary. This revered division is responsible for creating BMW's most high-performance models, transferring motorsport expertise to the road. For many of these models, Pirelli engineers have drawn on nearly 120 years of motorsport experience to bring their competition know-how to the road.
