By 2026, all natural rubber used in Pirelli's European factories will be certified by FSC™ (Forest Stewardship Council™)1. This process has already begun, and will gradually involve all production plants to produce increasingly environmentally-friendly tyres.
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE FSC™ CERTIFICATION?
Strict FSC™ forest management standards require forests to be managed in a way that preserves biological diversity, benefiting workers and local communities in a way that is cost-effective for them. The FSC™ Chain of Custody certification process verifies that FSC™-certified material is segregated and not contaminated by non-certified material, from plantation to tyre manufacturer.
THE PATH OF PIRELLI AND FSC™
At the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2024, Pirelli announced that it has partnered with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to supply FSC™ certified forest-based tyres on a wide range of luxury vehicles, while the world's first road tyre containing FSC™ certified natural rubber and rayon produced by Pirelli was unveiled in 2021. The other significant milestones on this journey are the introduction of FSC™ rubber tyres in the Formula 1 championship starting from the first GP of 2024 and the début of certification also in the cycling world, with the new Pirelli P Zero Race RS2.
1. The natural rubber in Pirelli car tyres accounts for about 15% of total tyre weight.
2. The natural rubber accounts for the following percentage of total tyre weight:
about 16% in the tyres for the BMW X5 xDrive45e Plug-In Hybrid;
about 15% in Formula 1 tyres;
about 23% in the P Zero Race RS.
