Verstappen also a “cannibal” in the Sprint
Max Verstappen seems to have an insatiable appetite for seeing his name at the top of any sort of timesheet. Not only has he been the dominant force on Sundays for almost four years now, but he's actually relentless on any day when the cars are on track. From 2021 onwards, the year he clinched his first world title, the Dutchman has taken pole position 37 times from 77 attempts, twenty more than the next driver on this list covering this time period, Charles Leclerc.
Max has demonstrated the same hunger for the Sprint, which was actually introduced in 2021. Of the 15 “short” races, the Red Bull Racing driver has won ten. His latest victory came this afternoon when he got out his claws after being passed by Norris at turn 3. The aggression he demonstrated taking back the position at the following corner, even though the Englishman still had the use of DRS, was incredible and yet another demonstration of his class and his limitless determination.
The rest of Verstappen's Sprint statistics include four podium finishes, eight pole positions and 97 points, leaving the other drivers to fight over the scraps.
The five races that didn't go his way saw the wins split between Valtteri Bottas twice, George Russell, Sergio Perez and Oscar Piastri, while the remaining pole positions went to Lando Norris twice, along with one each for Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Kevin Magnussen and the previously mentioned Bottas and Piastri.
When it comes to Sprint points, it's pretty close behind Verstappen. Having finished fifth today, Carlos Sainz moves up to second on 53 points, getting ahead of joint third, Leclerc and Perez, who are one point further back. No fewer than 18 of the 20 drivers on the Formula 1 grid this year have managed to grab hold of a few Saturday points, the only exceptions being Logan Sargeant and Guanyu Zhou.
