Is this the start of the papaya era?

Two races, two wins, or three if you choose to include the final Grand Prix of the 2024 season. McLaren has started the season in the kind of form it hasn't shown in over a decade and it seems to have everything in place to make its mark this year. The one-two in Shanghai, the English team's fiftieth, follows on from what could have been the same result a week ago in Melbourne, but for a driving error in the rain.

And all this after a far from promising start to the Chinese weekend, with Piastri third and Norris only sixth in Sprint Qualifying, while in the short race, the Australian finished second, but a long way behind the winner Hamilton, while Norris only got past Stroll with three laps remaining to scrape his way to the last measly point on offer. However, meticulous work by the engineers, led by Andrea Stella once parc ferme rules had been lifted, allowed the two drivers to improve dramatically over the flying lap on Saturday afternoon, with Piastri securing pole and Norris behind him in third place. On Sunday, they scored maximum points, thus stamping their authority on both championships.

Therefore, McLaren has not displayed the dominant form seen in the recent past from Mercedes and Red Bull, but it was a clear example of how the team has faced its difficulties without letting emotion get the better of it, rising from the ashes, which eight years ago saw it finish ninth out of ten in the Constructors' championship. It simply analysed the problems one by one before solving them. A further example of this approach was the way it managed Norris' brake problem in the closing stages of the race. All this while trying to balance the ambitions of their two hard-chargers, both of them increasingly aware that this could be their year.

Can we therefore say we are witnessing the start of a new era in the age of hybrid Formula 1, to follow on from the dominant days of Mercedes and Red Bull? Maybe it's too early to tell:  a year ago after the Shanghai race, back then round 5 on the calendar, everyone was saying that Red Bull would still be top dog. What is certain is that the colour that stands out the most at the dawn of this new season is papaya.
