Legacy of speed

GP: Australian GP
Date: 27 March 2011
Winner: Sebastian Vettel - Red Bull Renault

History repeats itself. Pirelli is back in F1, 20 years on from its last appearance in 1991.

Melbourne this time, Adelaide back then, in the Italian marque's 199th GP, and a final appearance for Nelson Piquet, who that same year gave Pirelli it's last win, at the wheel of a Benetton in Canada.

Fast forward 20 years to what is race number 200 for Pirelli, which see the return of coloured bands to help spectators distinguish between the various compounds.

A good idea that is still in use today.

Having taken the title the previous year, Sebastian Vettel had everything under control in his brilliant Red Bull, taking a comfortable win ahead of Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes.

Third was Renault's Vitaly Petrov, the first Russian to race in F1, his greatest moment in the sport, as it was to be his only podium finish.

Born in Vyborg on 8 September 1984, tall and reserved, Petrov had made his debut the previous year with Renault.

He would go on to also race for Caterham, taking part in 58 Grands Prix, scoring 64 points, but generally he had a frustrating time of it.

We remember him here, as we reckon many will have forgotten.
