Home Life Sustainability The ocean in Milan

The sea has never been this close to Milan. One Ocean Foundation launched the first edition of Milan Ocean Week during Design Week and to celebrate World Oceans Day on 8 June 2022. The event, promoted by the Prefecture and the Municipality of Milan, will be held in several locations across the city from 8 to 12 June and will be sponsored by event partner Pirelli, confirming the manufacturer's commitment to sustainability and an increasingly green future. Ambrogio Beccaria announced his role as Ambassador of One Ocean Foundation during the presentation at the Civic Aquarium in Milan.

FIVE DAYS OF BLUE

Milan Ocean Week will transform some areas of the city into large marine ecosystems, turning many deep blue, like the BAM botanical gardens with workshops and activities for children, adults and the Civic Aquarium, where visitors are invited to immerse themselves in “Momentum”, an interactive space designed by Stark to reflect on the concept of time and the effects of human behaviour on the environment. Other sites will be the Centrale dell'Acqua, the Natural History Museum, the Darsena dei Navigli and Via Gesù in the fashion district, which will become a “seaside street” with a furniture installation made of recycled plastic recovered from the ocean.

AMBROGIO BECCARIA “THE SEAMAN OF THE PLAINS” WILL BE ATTENDING

With this event, Milan will be the first Italian city to celebrate World Oceans Day, raising awareness of issues related to the blue economy and the protection of the seas and oceans with the general public. Several celebrities who made the sea their home will be attending, like Milan-born yachtsman Ambrogio Beccaria, who became an Ambassador of the One Ocean Foundation. The opportunity was created by Pirelli, the main and lead sponsor of “Alla Grande”, the first 100% Italian modern ocean sailing project, and promoter of One Ocean Week. Both projects share a common concern for the environment and, in particular, for the seas. Ambrogio will be meeting the students of 15 high school classes in Milan to talk about his adventure and will be one of the stars of the “Ocean Talks”‘ at the Centrale dell'Acqua and the BAMFORUM conference, moderated by Corriere della Sera columnist Massimo Sideri.

DIVING INTO ONE OCEAN FOUNDATION

At the helm of the initiative is One Ocean Foundation, the Italian organisation for preserving our oceans, established in February 2018 in the wake of the One Ocean Forum, organised in Milan in October 2017 by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The mission of One Ocean Foundation is the protection and conservation of the marine and coastal environment. How can this be accomplished? By seeking to accelerate solutions to the problems of the oceans, inspiring leaders, companies and institutions, promoting a sustainable blue economy and improving knowledge of the topic by disseminating research validated by the One Ocean Foundation Scientific Committee and other international organisations. Milan Ocean Week is another small step towards this important goal.
