A 42% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 compared with 2015 and a cut of 9% for those of raw materials purchased by 2025 compared with 2018. These are Pirelli's the two overall environmental targets approved by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi), an organization that defines and promotes best practices, based on scientific factors, for emissions' reduction.
In particular, SBTi validated the targets for the reduction of Pirelli's greenhouse gas emissions – which call for actions coherent with maintaining climate warming “within 1.5°C” – after the company reached four years ahead of schedule the previous SBTi targets that called for actions to remain “well below 2°C”.
Born of the cooperation between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), SBTi's goal is to guide companies in the definition of ambitious science-based targets for the containment of the planet's temperature increase.
Marco Tronchetti Provera, CEO and Executive Vice Chairman of Pirelli, commented: “The validation of targets that are still more ambitious for the reduction of greenhouse gases by the Science Based Targets initiative is an authoritative acknowledgement of our commitment to the fight against climate change that sees us committed daily through our Research & Development into ever more efficient solutions along the whole value chain”.
