A road trip in winter is the perfect opportunity to admire snow-covered landscapes and mountain routes, crossing scenic roads and the most iconic passes of the Old Continent. To travel safely even in colder weather and on sometimes snowy, wet or icy roads, it is essential to equip your car with tyres that are suitable for winter conditions and comply with the regulations of the various European countries. Regulations, in fact, can change from one country to another. Before setting off, it is therefore advisable to find out about the requirements in force in the countries you intend to drive through. In particular, Germany and France have updated their regulations on mandatory winter equipment. Finally, remember that, throughout Europe, tyres must have a minimum tread depth of 1.6 mm, although there are some exceptions, explained in this article.
Here is an overview of the obligations and prohibitions to keep in mind, country by country, even before traveling, we always recommend you to check the complete legislation of each individual state you intend to visit. Our review does not claim to be exhaustive and, although it has been written with diligence, we cannot guarantee the completeness or accuracy of the information provided, or any subsequent changes that may occur in the various countries. We therefore invite you to check the regulations in force before traveling.
