Over 5,000 specialised medical examinations every year and 25,000 medical services, of which 5,000 diagnostic procedures and blood tests. These are the numbers of Poliambulatorio Pirelli, the free clinic for employees that has been operating for nearly 90 years at the Bicocca.
Established in 1926, the clinic is a medical structure of excellence. It is free and open on weekdays to employees for specialised medical examinations and check-ups. Advantages are in terms of cost, particularly for specialised medical examinations (allergological, dermatological, endocrinological, neurological, oculist, gynaecological, cardiological, pneumological, urological, orthopaedic, angiological, etc.) and other medical services (radiographies, ultrasound scans, electrocardiographs, blood and urine tests etc.), but also of time. By operating exclusively for Pirelli and being located on the premises, the waiting list for accessing the clinic services is very short as is the time needed to reach the clinic itself. The presence of a doctor ten hours a day means being able to avoid long queues in the GP's office, which is a help to employees to manage their personal time.
Over the past three years alone, Pirelli has invested nearly 40 million Euro in health and safety contributing in 2015 to improving the work-related accident frequency index by 6% with respect to 2014 and by 73% with respect to 2009.
The clinic is not Pirelli's only activity in the matter of health: #sentirmibene (#FeelingWell), for instance, is the name chosen by the corporate welfare division to identify all well-being and health-related activities, including prevention campaigns and conferences, and activities aimed at creating behavioural awareness. The activities of #sentirmibene include the possibility of receiving free 'flu vaccines and the service, activated during the World Thyroid Week, to do specific blood tests directly at the clinic. This activity organised by the side of the conference entitled “Thyroid health: from children to the elderly” involved 400 people, that is nearly one fourth of the employees working at the Bicocca Headquarters.
Another health service is the Fondo Assistenziale Sanitario (F.A.S) (Health Welfare Fund), established in 1980 for employees, retirees and their dependent family members to reimburse expenses for indirect medical procedures integrating those provided by the Italian National Health Service. This is a practical, tangible help for everyone who works in Pirelli and revolves around the world of the "Long P" to make physical and mental well-being always available to them.
