Latest news from Haiti

The cholera epidemic that broke out on the island of Haiti in October is causing some delay in the work at the three schools under reconstruction, which is taking place thanks to Pirelli and its employees through the My Time for Haiti campaign.

Fortunately, according to direct response from the UNHCR Emergency Response Team for Haiti, the children are well and within a few days l’Ecole Atenoir Furmin  and l’Ecole Congreganiste Marie Jeanne, filles de Marie will be inaugurated at Belladère. There have been delays concerning the National Public School at Anse-a-Pitre, because of the intensification of border controls with the Dominican Republic.

“As for the National Public School in Anse-a-Pitre”, we learn from our UNHCR correspondent in Haiti, “due to the cholera outbreak and the tightening of border controls, we foresee additional delay in the implementation of the construction of the three classrooms”.

The photographs of the two Belladère schools’ inauguration will soon be on the Intranet.

With the world leaders for energy efficiency

Climate change is a subject vitally important to the future of the planet on which Pirelli, together with other major multi-nationals, has been actively committed for many years with substantial resources and investments and through awareness actions and the lobbying of world governments.

The latest initiative is the signing of the Cancun Communiqué by Pirelli Tyre, a programmatic document by the Corporate Leaders’ Group on Climate Change, to be presented to world governments meeting in Cancun from 29 November at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change.

Briefly, the companies that have signed the communiqué are asking the governments of the United Nations to actuate a precise energy policy able to generate efficiency in all sectors, to the advantage of the health of mankind and to the environment.

Among the Italian company which are signatories to the communiqué, together with Pirelli Tyre and Parts, are Barilla, ENEL and Telecom.

The Corporate Leaders’ Group on Climate Change was established at Cambridge University on the initiative of the HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales. It brings together the largest British, European and international companies united by the conviction that new long-term policies are indispensible in facing climate change. The objective of the organisation is to collaborate with the institutions to guarantee concrete actions are taken to achieve this new approach to business.

Pirelli Tyre and Parts had already adhered to the Communiqué of Copenhagen in 2009 for the development of new policies in order to respond to the urgent question of climate change, in particular for the control of CO₂ emissions. And it did so in 2007 by subscribing to the Bali Communiqué, the document for the development of concrete strategies through a joint intervention of governments for an exhaustive world agreement on the climate.

Victory with zero emission

Pirelli Diablo Supercorsas have won the first international competition for electrically propelled motorcycles, organised by the International Motorcycle Federation (IMF). The victory was scored on 26 September at Italy’s Imola motor racing circuit, where over 70,000 spectators, who were there to watch the 12th round in the World Superbike Championship, saw the e-Power race won by Tuscan rider Tommaso Betti on a bike he built himself, the Betti Moto.

“It was a historic championship”, said Betti. We improved the bike with every race, which took us to victory. We would like to thank Pirelli for its especially valuable technical support”.

“The Pirelli Diablo Supercorsas are noted for their optimum grip and even wear, which are fundamental to motorcycles with electric motors that generate full power right from the start”, added Giorgio Barbier, racing director of Pirelli Moto. The e-Power championship gave us a glimpse of new opportunities in ‘sustainable’ competition, where the investment in innovative technology – especially in the field of electric motorbikes – continually changes the competitiveness of the teams”.
